The Windward Dog Park Hui (WDPH) is partnering with Bayview Golf Course to overcome a costly obstacle preventing the opening the Kahua O Waikalua Dog Park, the first sanctioned C&C Honolulu off-leash dog park on the Windward side.
WDPH's goals are simple: Help to resolve the safety concerns for patrons of both the dog park and the golf course and help to keep the community informed about progress on the dog park. Additional fundraising is required since City funds cannot legally be used to pay for the realignment of the nearby golf course hole. We are excited because we know that this dog park will be an inherent community gathering space and will connect neighbors, friends, and strangers under one common experience.
We are fundraising a total of $68,400 to cover the costs of the hole realignment and we've reached 44% of our goal as of March 2024. We are now managing two additional foundation grants for our program. Your donations help too! We have several donation options available--all tax-deductible.
Other Updates as of September 2024:
Fundraising: The dog park is essentially completed but still not open pending the completion of the realigned Hole #7, to prevent errant golf balls from being hit into the park.
Access Easement: Negotiations between the City & County and Bayview Golf Course regarding a legal easement access to Kahua O Waikalua dog park in Kaneohe are moving along. Once the agreement is finalized, the dog park will open.
We continue to seek out grants from larger grantmaking organizations and are brainstorming for substantial fundraising events. If you, or anyone you know would be willing to volunteer to help us reach our final goal, please reach out to us at windwarddogs@gmail.com

We participated in a community meeting hosted by Councilmember Esther Kiaʻāina on September 6th and joined a group of speakers sharing about their progress on the dog park. Some key highlights included update on the road access easement, our on-going fundraiser to re-align the hole at the neighboring golf course, and other park concerns. Mahalo for inviting us to join the conversation!
Mahalo to HC&D for its early and generous support of the Kahua O Waikalua Safety Project. We appreciated being featured in your newsletter!
Mahalo to the Harold K.L. Castle Foundation for its generous support of the Kahua O Waikalua Safety Project.
With support from the Minami Community Foundation, the WDPH will initiate early park upgrades as soon as the new dog park officially opens to the public. This project will include the installation of benches, park maintenance supplies, and other amenities for dogs and their owners. This will eventually transition into a volunteer program focused on upkeep of the park beyond basic maintenance by the Department of Parks & Recreation.
