The WDPH seeks to work with its members, Department of Parks & Recreation, and other stakeholders to help fund, maintain, and operate an off-leash dog park. The WDPH has garnered the support from state and city officials, neighborhood boards, the Hawaiian Humane Society and community at-large.
The WDPH has succeeded in raising public awareness by participating in community events, public meetings, media articles and Facebook.
The parcel, located next to Bayview Golf Course, was recently named Kahua O Waikalua Dog Park. In addition, the City Council appropriated $250,000 towards dog park development. The park is not yet ready for public use but City Councilmember, Esther Kiaʻāina is working hard with city officials and Bayview management to get this long-awaited project completed.
The WDPH board consists of four members who serve as volunteers: President; Vice President; Treasurer; Secretary; board members can also serve at-large. Board members are voted in and may serve indefinitely or until voted out, or resign.
